Liisa Matinvesi-Bassett, UK country manager at PriceSpy, comments: “Simply put, no-one wants to pay more for something than they have to. Knowing the best time to buy can help with year-round budgeting and ensure you’re in a position to snap-up great offers when they come around.”

Peak pricing premium: seasonality

Buying a pizza oven in the peak of summer, in July, will cost over 25% more than its average price over the course of the year. Similarly, buying garden storage at the end of the summer season will set you back even more - over a third more - than the average price during the year.

For some items, but certainly not all, shoppers would be significantly better off buying out-of-season. For example, December was the cheapest month in 2023 to buy a BBQ.

Liisa continues: “Seasonality is nothing new when it comes to retailers’ pricing strategies, however PriceSpy’s data reveals just how significant the premium can be when it comes to peak seasonal pricing. That said, a trend is just a trend and there’s no rule stating that pricing will follow the same pattern again this year. Therefore, using a price comparison service and setting up notifications for price drops is the best way of snapping up a product at the best price.”
