Food inflation leads to ‘make-your-own’ boom

New research from PriceSpy, the impartial price and product comparison service, has uncovered a boom in ‘make-your-own’ as people look for ways to tackle rising food inflation.

According to PriceSpy data, the popularity of equipment to help people make their own food and drink has skyrocketed. 

Filter coffee and espresso machines:

  • Risen in popularity by 17% year-on-year

  • Risen in popularity by 78% compared to previous six months

  • The cost of a takeaway coffee has increased by 17% in the last year

Soda makers:

  • Risen in popularity by 52% year-on-year

  • Risen in popularity by 44% compared to previous six months

  • Though, the cost of tonic water has in fact decreased by 12% in the last year

Bread makers:

  • Risen in popularity by 6% year-on-year

  • Risen in popularity by 93% compared to previous six months

  • The cost of sliced white bread has increased by 17% in the last year

Pasta machines:

  • Risen in popularity by 72% year-on-year

  • Risen in popularity by 70% compared to previous six months

  • The cost of pasta has increased by 25% in the last yea

Pizza ovens:

  • Risen in popularity by 42% year-on-year

  • However, dropped in popularity by 34% compared to previous six months

  • The price of a takeaway pizza has increased by 15% in the last year

Liisa Matinvesi-Bassett, UK country manager at PriceSpy, comments on the ‘make-your-own’ trend:

“With both groceries and the cost of buying food and drink out increasing so much, we’re seeing the emergence of budding baristas, bakers and Italian chefs as people strive to out-smart record-high food prices.”

 

 

“Whilst the initial outlay cost of some of these items can be high, people are clearly thinking about benefits in the long-term when investing in pieces that can help them ‘make-your-own’. The great thing about the make-your-own boom is that people are also learning new skills that can last them a lifetime.”

PriceSpy also notes that the popularity of the airfryer shows no signs of slowing. In fact, it continues to get more and more popular as more people look to reduce their energy consumption in the kitchen:

Airfryers:

  • Risen in popularity by 2,532% year-on-year

  • Risen in popularity by 372% compared to previous six months

As well as food, there’s also a clear trend of people learning to make and fix their own clothing with the popularity of sewing machines booming:

Sewing machines:

  • Risen in popularity by 49% year-on-year

  • Risen in popularity by 57% compared to previous six months

  • The price of a men’s jumper has increased by 32% in the last year, with the price of a women’s jumper rising by 7%
